Lochinver and the local area

The fishing village of Lochinver is the largest township in the Parish of Assynt. Set amongst some of the finest scenery in the country, the village just about encircles the whole bay. Historically, and before the advent of the motor car, most things needed for human survival in this remote land, were delivered by boat, so the harbour here was always of some considerable significance to the people of Lochinver, and to all the parishioners living in the surrounding hamlets, and hinterland of Assynt. Today, the now very modern harbour, still plays an extremely important role, with lots of fishing boats landing their catches here for onward transmission by road to the continent, as well as to many parts of the British Isles.

Lochinver boasts the world famous Highland Stoneware Pottery, where you can watch the pots being made and hand painted, a sports and learning centre, several excellent eating places, a coffee shop, Post Office with unique letter box, little stores selling a variety of products, fuel station, superb visitor centre with a host of information, and of course it's finest asset, the location, centred in an area of unsurpassed scenic beauty. With lots of interesting things to do, and many places to see when you stay here, you will soon realise that Assynt cannot be explored in a day or two, and it will take several visits to this wonderful area before you will become fully acquainted with it all. That is why so many people return time and again to this beautiful corner of southwest Sutherland. Along the coastline there are numerous sandy beaches, rocky coves, and little villages. All are unique in one way or another, so there is lots and lots of exploring to be done. Based here for a few days, you can experience peace and serenity, or if you so wish get involved in more exhilarating activities like hill walking, angling or whatever else takes your fancy. With all of that, and staying in the excellent accommodation in Lochinver provided by us at Polcraig Guest House, your holiday in Assynt should be a superb one.
