Things to do

To help you get the best out of your visit to Polcraig Guest House, We have put together a list of different activities that are available to you when staying in Assynt. You will not be short of things to occupy your time, as this part of the west coast has a wealth of natural attractions out there, waiting to be discovered.

For walkers there is an abundance of hill paths some of which meander through deep valleys following the course of the little streams on the valley floors. For the more adventurous, there are lots of mountains to climb. Some look easy, some look impossible depending on where you are viewing them from, but all are climbable with relative safety if you follow the correct routes, and exercise proper care.

For anglers there are hundreds of lochs to fish. A very successful little booklet called "Trout Fishing in Assynt" (authored by Cathel MacLeod, a local expert and the previous owner of Polcraig Guest House), is available from Amazon Books, Glasgow Angling Centre, Achins Bookshop, Inverkirkaig and from ourselves at a cost of £10.00, all proceeds of which goes to the Assynt Angling Group. This lovely publication will help you choose some of the best places to test your angling skills.

We are always on hand to give you any assistance that you require when planning your trip, so do not hesitate to ask. We have been visiting Assynt for several years and as a result, have a good familiarity of the area, so good information is always on tap for your guidance.

Assynt is located in the North West Highlands Geopark. This status was attained in 2004 as a result of the natural and exceptional geological features found here. Geoparks are territories where the geological heritage of the Earth is safeguarded and sustainably managed. There must be strong local involvement and a commitment to develop a plan that meets the local economic needs of the people, whilst at the same time protecting the landscape where they live.

There is an outstanding local Ranger Service in Lochinver, and guided walks throughout the summer months, are one of the ongoing features of that provision. This facility works out of the Lochinver Visitor Centre, located about 100 yards from Polcraig Guest House. The Centre is a must visit for you and much information can be gleaned freely there, along with many other interesting and unusual things to view.

If you check out our links page you will be able to access most or all of the information for each of the things to do, that we have included.
