Excellent deer stalking is available on several local estates around Lochinver, but this activity has to be booked well in advance of your visit here. Red deer stags are in season from 1st July to the 20th October, and red deer hinds from 21st October until 16th February.
The annual rutt or mating season begins anytime from around 20th September and is in full swing by early October. Listen to the roar of the stags echoing through the glens, as they shout out their challenge, zealously guarding their group of hinds. It is a spectacular display of strength as the stags lock antlers and fight for supremacy. For you, just a marvellous time to be out in the mountains observing nature at it's very best.
Many different species of wild birds inhabit the Parish of Assynt. You can encounter golden eagle, buzzard, hawk, falcon, osprey, owl, and the occasional sea eagle, red and black throated diver, golden plover, mallard, teal, wigeon, woodpigeon, lapwing, to name but a few. Hosts of little birds, such as sparrow, robin, finch, wagtail, yellow hammer, thrush, blackbird, redwing, siskin, starling, and so on.
Common seabirds such as herring gull, yellow legged gull, common gull, tern, kittywake, puffin, guillemot, razorbill, and many many others.
I could go on, but there are volumes written on the subject already. This is just a little taste of what is here, so explore and seek them out, it is a paradise for birdwatchers.
